Five reasons you should practice prayer

Surely the most of us that were raised in the belief of a religion in its traditional sense were taught to pray at some time of our childhood. If we were lucky, they taught us to prayer every night to praise him, to thank him for the day that we lived, to confess ‘sins’, and to request him that everything goes well on the following day. If we didn’t have luck, we were limited to repeat canned prayers. During some years this way to make things worked well, but when we reach adulthood almost everybody leave this practice.

“This is useless! Not even we receive an answer”, we say.

And that’s how prayer becomes an activity almost exclusively executed by grandmas. And it is not that I have something against grandmas, but our times and our issues are very different from those the average grandma has. But surprise! Prayer can also be useful for you and me.

Some time ago I wanted to invigorate the practice of my prayer. I wasn’t in agreement with the prayer model that I knew since childhood because my needs as an adult require a different approach to God. In addition, everything had become totally dogmatic and that is not something that makes me feel comfortable, so I put hands to the work and as a proud son of the web era I obtained the following list of thoughts as a result:

Prayer doesn’t have to be a religious obligation, but a sincere expression of your need of communication with your Father

Prayer becomes petrified when practiced as an obligation, and it becomes fruitful and natural when practiced as the sincere desire of the spirit to approach the Father, our creator.

Prayer builds courage

When it is practiced sincerely, prayer contributes to courage. When you dedicate a time, together with God, to think about those subjects that cause problems to you in a form or another, you obtain a different, more relaxed perspective that allows you to face those issues with greater maturity. Basically it shows you that problems in this world are fleeting but the experience you gain is forever true and useful. Therefore fear disappears and lightening arrives.

Prayer is indeed a dialogue

Of course it is not a dialogue in the human sense of the word. This dialogue happens at spiritual level. If you dedicate yourself to sincere prayer you are giving yourself sincerely to God and its positive influence will get noticed in your spirit, calming your impulses and giving you wisdom. In summary, prayer emphasizes your best side.

Prayer fortifies your relation with God

Just putting yourself in presence of the Father fortifies your relation with Him. And if you have avoided solemnity and you are not afraid of Him in any sense, then you have definitively integrated Him into your life like one more person of your family, and then love can flow freely. Thus, you can effectively realize that He’s a loving Father, that not to only takes care and protects you, but He also wants the best things for you and gives you all the needed freedom in order to let you express yourself in all your magnificence.

In prayer you find the understanding and guide of the Father

During sincere prayer is when you act as you really are. If you believe in God then you know he is almighty, and therefore it doesn’t make any sense to hide nothing. You know that you will not be criticized, not even judged, and as a result you appear in front of Him just like you are, with all your defects and virtues, finding the loving refuge of our dear Father. But don’t be naive. This understanding is not like a drug escape or a magical solution. Human life has problems, tribulations and contradictions that are here due to the imperfection of our condition, but if you take those situation as an opportunity then you become stronger as a person, and that alone is a sufficient reason to not avoid them, becase is better to learn to face them and defeat them. So, our Father’s understanding of your situations is expressed as a kind of protection feeling and later euphoria in the confidence that it doesn’t matter what happens, you will always leave winner in every difficult situation if only you guide yourself as you feel that God would do it.

In summary, prayer takes you a little more nearer to God. My eternal objective is to reach Him, that’s the reason why I take this subject very seriously every day, but I have found that prayer by itself is not so effective if it isn’t accompanied by the action.     mmmm…si pero porque el blog en ingles dime eres de esos religiosos que tratan de meternos esas ideas burdas, y digo burdas porque de verdad no son logicas, en fin no me gustan aquellos que no respetan a los demas y tratan de transformarlos!!! a como de lugar…nose pero ojala no seas uno de ellos

    El blog es en ingles porque asi lo puede entender mas gente alrededor del mundo, chinos, africanos, chilenos y gringos por igual.

    No intento convencer a nadie a que crea lo que yo creo, sólo comparto mis pensamientos y el que quiere lee. Si piensas que mis ideas son burdas estas en todo tu derecho :) Jamás intentaré convencerte de lo contrario. Un problema común con las religiones tradicionales es justamente eso que dices, que tratan de convencerte de que lo que ellos piensan es lo correcto, y si no lo compartes, estas fuera y eres mal@/pecador(a)/infiel, etc.

    Sobre el tema de la lógica… casi toda creencia religiosa es ilogica, pues no puedes demostrarla. Y creeme que sé de lógica (soy licenciado en matemáticas y hay que dominar muy bien la lógica para ser matemático).

    Lo único que me interesa es hacer un aporte para que la gente elija sus creencias de forma conciente. Si deciden seguir una religión “normal” o no es cosa de cada uno, no tendría porque juzgar a nadie si no cree lo que yo. Yo tengo mi propio conjunto de creencias y tú tendrás las tuyas, y ese conjunto que yo elegí no tiene porque ser el mismo que el tuyo.

    A final de cuentas mi postura se resume con lo que dije en el primer post: “I don’t say that my set of beliefs it’s the real religion that everybody was looking for. No. You can agree with my thoughts or not.”

    Finalmente, la mejor prueba de que no quiero transformar a nadie es el blog mismo. El que quiere lo lee, el que no, no lo lee ;) A nadie le obligan a leer robertoalamos.com en el colegio o la universidad ;)
