Attract business by having a strong online presence
Having an online presence in the form of a blog, a website or some other kind of job you have done is not only a good way to convince a possible recruiter that you are the best candidate to fill that job you are looking for.
No, it can do more than that. It can bring you business by itself, or as I like to say, it’s a source of “passive business generation”.
The most basic form of business you can attract by having an online presence is new customers. They will see what you have done and they will say “Hey, this guy is great and he can make what we need. Let’s talk to him to offer the job we have here waiting to be filled”. I have done that before and I’m constantly doing it thanks to this blog, my free tagified ads website TheAdCloud.com and some press I have received through the years. In fact, yesterday I accepted a new freelance position to develop a nice web2.0 application for the chilean market. I never looked for that position, they came to me thanks to TheAdCloud.com because they thought that given what I have done there I was the right person to help them. Pretty easy, isn’t it?The second way, and the most sophisticated kind of business your online presence can brings to you is partnerships. OK, a banner exchange offering is not that sophisticated, but most of the times you will make a good decision accepting them. I have received that kind of offers and they have been very useful for my objectives even when the other site had less visitors than mine.
In the other hand, if you have something to show there are chances that you will be able to attract joint venture offers. That’s true, suddenly you will have offers to start a new company with strangers! I have been in both sides, in the one receiving the offer and the one offering the opportunity, and although sometimes is difficult to reach an agreement regarding money issues, you will still earn at least experience from this kind of partnerships, even when they finally don’t get launched.
So now that you know your online work can become a passive business generator, you don’t have any excuse to don’t do anything, therefore don’t stop yourself and do as Seth Godin said: “make something happen now“. And once you have done that you’ll want to keep the flow of unrequested business opportunities coming in, so be sure to keep your online presence fresh by updating your blog or showing that you actively maintain your website or other examples of work. I do that with this blog and I’m getting very good results, even taking in accont that this blog is very new.
Another person who thinks almost the same as me about having a strong online presence to attract business is Anne Zelenka from Web Worker Daily. Be sure to check her post about this topic here.
